Bratwursts and Bugles - Who'd Believe These Guys Are Practicing Leadership?

Last spring I was a guest of honor at not one but two bachelor weekends. I should probably keep that whole "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas" slogan, but since we were in Wentzville, Missouri, I think I can spill the beans. And to not get excited ... This was not like an early Tom Hanks film.

It is a pretty common expression that goes around with this group of buds during a boys' weekend ": for every dude who shows the collective IQ goes down another 20 points."The next thing you know, there are a dozen grown men with bloating stuffing sausages and Bugles our throats with alarming speed. After thirty hours of ESPN Sports Center, play golf, start Beavis and Butthead, like Mensa members in comparison to us.

Yet each has a different (and necessary) role in the group. It's always the guy doing that, not the grill to burn down the house. Then there is the person that you are sure that we make our tee time. Andanother, the start when things are heavy or boring, lightens the mood. Want to know the crazy thing? Everyone has the ability in any situation at any given time. The guy with a garden Jart as shish kabob can be very good, smoothing the matter with John Q. Law, if the neighbors call in a violation of the noise!

I used to post the functionality of this group to the fact we have known since we were teenagers. But a few weeks ago, I learned something new ...

Earlier thisMonth, I invited to facilitate a leadership retreat for students at Willamette University. One of the first activities of the retreat was a simplified Myers-Briggs personality assessment, a test that I have done many times before.

I am very surprised as was my previous designation as "curious, intellectual, creative" completely on its head. Now? I am a "proper equivalent, and process engineering." What? As an unspectacular is it?

As we have the results of the personalityEvaluation, it quickly became clear: It does not matter what "I"! Okay, yes - of course it is helpful to have an overview of your own personality. It never hurts to know your own strengths and weaknesses. However, for a leader to know the personalities of those around you, where is the real help!

If the new groups come together, things get really interesting. Most of the people "thought leaders" as a person who is sociable, articulate, and the decision makers for all others. This may be the case ... but it may also just the class clown! The real leader is the one that the mission always at the forefront of thought for all. This guide uses them each person's individual talents, to move forward quickly and efficiently to the target group. Completion so not as the loudmouth at the front of the room. It takes observation and analysis of search, to see to understand how each works in a group, that the information and the ability to tap intodifferent personality characteristics with the group Guidelines for performance! This process automatically places a person in a position of authority. Even if this person is a natural introvert and very un-sociable, his insight is immediately recognized as an important and necessary.

We know have one of the most important skills a leader can, is the ability to adapt. And understanding the different personality styles is a great place to implement the adjustment in practice. This creates an environment in whicheveryone wins: will get individuals to use their best abilities, and the group to achieve goals! And the best thing about it is that works equally well in the corporate, group and family environment!

We all know some people are naturally gifted in certain settings. Learning the tools of leadership can improve all our lives - even the "orderly, representing, and process engineering" types! In 2008, I wish you continued success in your observation, analysis and practice with the people in your area! Reminderthese key skills of leadership is sure to make 2008 the best year of your life ... so far!

Here's to a great 2008!
